The Bob Billingslea School of Hospitality Management and the American Chef Federation's Local Mid-Florida East Coast Chapter Conducts Healthy Food Drive for Daytona Beach Residents
On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, The Bob Billingslea School of Hospitality Management (BBSHM) in collaboration with the American Chef Federation’s (ACF) local Mid-Florida East Coast Chapter, conducted a healthy foods drive for the Daytona Beach community. The parking lot of the Wendell P. Holmes Business building on campus was the distribution site for fresh fruits and vegetables to approximately 1,400 families.
This initiative was sponsored by Five-Star Gourmet out of Ontario, CA, The Bob Billingslea School of Hospitality Management (BBSHM), Bethune-Cookman University, Bluechip Catering, and ACF. Charles Mallory, Chef Instructor/Culinary Lab Manager of BBSHM is treasurer of the Mid-Florida East Coast Chapter and owner of Bluechip Catering.
Working in conjunction with Director Dr. Deanne Williams-Bryant of BBSHM and volunteers including Ms. Garrick BBSHM Program Coordinator, the group of partners were able to distribute a trailer loaded with 30 pallets / 1,440 boxes of fruits and vegetables to the community. Daytona Beach is a designated food desert making this healthy food drive even more impactful to the families in need in this area.
BBSHM would like to thank Chief Gary Price and Campus Safety, Director of Campus Facilities Barry Carter, and Campus Photographer John Reeves. This initiative has been able to distribute 72,000 lbs. of produce to families throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties, Palm Coast, Pierson, Deland, and Daytona during the COVID-19 climate.
